How is the Overdentures Procedure Performed?
Implant supported overdentures are one of the most popular options available in full mouth restoration. They are much more affordable than complete dental implants and can be in place in as little as one day. At ABQ Dentures, we provide quality overdentures for our patients in our comfortable, relaxing office in Albuquerque.
To understand the procedure, you must know that there are different types of overdentures. The two main options are removable and fixed overdentures that use implants as support. Removable overdentures require at least two implants to secure them in place. Essentially, the removable overdentures snap into place. This is why they are often referred to as snap on dentures or snap in dentures. Fixed overdentures usually require four implants and are screwed into place. They are only removed by your dentist or prosthodontist.
What to Expect During Your Procedure
If you decide to receive overdentures at ABQ Dentures, Dr. Norby or Dr. Roukema will go over the procedure in detail and answer all your questions. The procedures vary depending on what type of overdentures you will be receiving. With removable overdentures, on the day of the procedure you will receive at least two dental implants at our office, usually on the lower jaw. For fixed overdentures, we add four dental implants. Typically, we place two on the upper and lower jaw. This oral surgery to insert the implants into the jaw bone is done at our office with local anesthesia.
For fixed overdentures, the temporary dentures can be secured in place the same day as the implants. With removable overdentures, there are dentures that can be worn home the same day, but they are not secured into place until the implants have healed. This is usually about two months later.
